How the numbers are worked out

  1. Pips = price difference ÷ pip size. Gold: (4045 − 4030) ÷ 0.10 = 150 pips.
  2. Pip value = $10 × lot size on gold. At 0.05 lots, one pip is worth $0.50.
  3. Profit = pips × pip value = 150 × $0.50 = $75 on a buy. On a sell, the same move is a $75 loss.

Questions about pips on gold

How much is 1 pip on gold?

On XAU/USD one pip is a $0.10 move in price. It is worth $0.10 at 0.01 lots, $1 at 0.10 lots and $10 at 1 standard lot.

How do I calculate pips on XAU/USD?

Take the difference between the two prices and divide by 0.10. From 4030.00 to 4040.00 is a $10.00 move, which is 100 pips.

How do I calculate profit on a gold trade?

Profit = pips × $10 × lot size. A 100-pip move at 0.05 lots is 100 × $10 × 0.05 = $50. A sell trade makes money when the price falls, so the same move upwards would be a $50 loss.

Pips or points: why does MetaTrader show a bigger number?

Most brokers quote gold with two decimals, and MetaTrader 5 counts the smallest step (0.01) as one point. One pip ($0.10) is therefore 10 points. If MT5 shows 800 points, that is 80 pips.

Do all brokers define a gold pip the same way?

Not quite. $0.10 is the most common convention and the one Traders World uses, but some sites call $0.01 or $1.00 a pip. Profit in dollars is the same either way; only the pip count changes. Check how your broker and your signal provider count pips.
